Your Thai homestay family

During your time on the volunteer course you will be welcomed into the homes of Thai families. This is so you can experience their way of life, as well as giving you support whilst on your program.

Your Thai family will provide food, travel to your school and be there to look after you. A real home from home. Your family will also go out of their way to integrate you into their routines, teaching you some basic Thai and treating you like one of the family!teacher

A typical bedroom provided by a Thai home-stay family. This is a spare room in one of our Thai homestay houses which is used to house volunteer teaching assistants.

Although this is an example of a room you may be staying in, accommodation varies.  We would expect you to integrate with the Thai family you would be staying with.  Other areas of the house would be available for you also, like the lounge.  You will be treated like part of the family.

Your Thai family may or not speak English. Clear communication is one of the challenges you will face - kindness can be said without words, however, and better yet we teach you Thai on the course so you should be able to improve to a reasonable level of Thai to get by. Don't let communication issues put you off - it's all part of the fun of adapting to a new country!

teacherA typical host:

P. Moo is a teacher at one of our volunteer schools.  She is married and has three children, but only one of her children lives with her.  Her other children are in their twenties and have left home.  She has two houses situated side by side and has room for three or four volunteers at one time.  She is situated right next to the river, which she says is her personal swimming pool.  She teaches English and says that anyone staying with her must like dogs.  She has six of them and several cats, but don’t worry, they have their own six-kennel house as well.

What if some homestay families cancel?

If there is the situation where homestay families cancel, usually we would look for another homestay family for you. In the unlikely event that we cannot find one, we will find some temporary accommodation for you and give you a food allowance for the remaining weeks.

Sometimes host families do cancel due to a death in the family, or pre-occupation with urgent matters that they do not have enough time to deal with our volunteers, but it's important that you know that if they do cancel, you will still be looked after!
