"Everything was great! Applying to Tefl heaven was an impulsive decision for me but easily the best I have ever made. If you're at all questioning whether to do it or not.... DO IT. You won't regret it!"

− Naomi Thompson

After this training course you will receive a TEFL certificate that means you are qualified to teach English anywhere in the world, not just China. Many people use this qualification to travel around Asia and Latin America, teaching English as they travel.

Once in Shanghai and in training, you will receive all the tools and advice necessary to find a job teaching English in China. Jobs are guaranteed to degree holders, and so you need not worry that you will not find one. Jobs are normally secured between 0 – 30 days after the training period ends.

Contracts are a minimum of 6 months. Language centres mostly accommodate to working adults so classes can be late afternoons, evenings or Saturdays. Teaching salaries depend on where you are situated but a typical salary for a teacher is 1800 USD – 2500 USD per month, working 20 teaching hours per week.

There are not many cities bigger than Shanghai. East meets west in terms of types of food available – it is one of the most modern cities in the world! Whether it’s burgers or noodles, you can find what you want in the vast city. There is so much to do and see, and a great transport system to be able to do it, you will never get bored!

We can help you book accommodation for the training period and most jobs offer either an accommodation stipend or provide accommodation. Accommodation during training ranges from 500 – 1000 USD for the 4 week period. You can also find some good deals on Agoda or Air BnB if you would rather book it yourself.

One of the great things about doing a training course before you launch into a paid job is that you break in gently to the country and make friends with like-minded people. Friends come easy when you are in similar circumstances and also if you spend so much time each day around them.

When you move into your teaching job, China has a great transport system, so as long as you haven’t chosen Outer Mongolia as your teaching destination, you should be fine!

From the Great Wall of China, to the long period of the Qing Dynasty to 1949 communism, to the fast growing free markets of China today – China is rich in history, progressive in character and deep in culture. Today, China boasts one of the strongest economies in the world and that means the demand to learn English has grown rapidly as well – with many families willing to pay for the skills they need to get ahead in the world.

When you settle in China however, things quickly become more normal and people are just as friendly as you would expect. The people love foreigners and they love to learn English. Teachers are highly respected and you will find that being a teacher in China is more than just a job. You are an example of the Western world.

As you can imagine, with China being one of the biggest countries by land mass, there are a variety of weather centres. The temperature from the north west to the south east moves from below freezing all the way to the tropical temperatures of Shanghai.

When giving and receiving gifts, present and receive them with both hands.

Being punctual shows respect.

Handshakes are a common greeting, as are head nods, but neither are necessary.

Do not overreact if people ask you about your marital status, family, age, or income as this is done to seek common ground.

  • As well as cycle lanes on footpaths in China, in some cities there are smartphone lanes for those who wish to walk, text and not bump into anyone.
  • Ice cream was invented in China 2000 years ago and consisted of a soft milk, snow and rice mixture.
  • China has only one time zone, despite its size.
  • There are more Christians in China, than in Italy at an estimated 54 million.

Shanghai literally means “on the sea” in Chinese, and is a mega city with a population of over 23 million people. It is one of the most famous cities in the world and is a mix of eastern culture with western amenities.

Shanghai has an excellent transport system, with buses, metro and even high speed rail. Shanghai is where the stock exchange is located and it is one of the busiest business centres in the world, with much international and domestic business taking place in Shanghai.

For those who wish to stay in Shanghai and teach English, there are many opportunities because English is a sought after language of business. As well as businesses seeking better English skills for their staff, parents encourage children to be studious and there are many language centres available that cater only to young learners.

Apart from that, there is much to do and see in Shanghai – from riding the rollercoaster at the Pearl Tower, to watching a bird singing contest, to eating at a 4D restaurant, to pondering in one of the many museums – you will find it very hard to be bored!
