teach english in thailand

Training as part of a group has many advantages; the prospect of living in a foreign country can be quite daunting, and so being in a group from the start allows you to make friends and create a network of familiar and friendly faces that will add another dimension to the whole experience and allow you to share the excitement and moments of accomplishment.

Once you have completed your training you’ll receive a certificate to certify that you have completed 120 hours of classroom training and 8 hours of observed teaching practice. It’s important to note that this qualification is recognised internationally so can be used anywhere. Following this, you’ll be assisted in securing a quality paid teaching position in Thailand, and for those who have a bachelor’s degree, this is offered as a guaranteed job. Once a job has been secured you’ll be earning a minimum of 30,000 THB per month which means you can really enjoy your time living and teaching in Thailand and have a very comfortable lifestyle.

It’s important to note that whilst 6 months is a minimum requirement, there is no upper limit, and so you can extend your contract upon mutual agreement, or seek another position.

"What a blast! If you want to teach English in Thailand, this is the place to learn how. The quality of instruction and the amount of actual teaching practice made this program superb. Would do it again in a heart beat."

− Danael Klarsson

You will be fully TEFL qualified after the training period, enabling you to teach English anywhere in the world. The TEFL Certificate is internationally recognized and so opens up the doors to placements and opportunities that would be otherwise unobtainable.

There’s no substitute for a fully intensive course, in any subject. By taking 4 weeks to study and practice teaching you will be well versed and have greater confidence to teach English, ready for your placement. Confidence is so important when teaching!

By taking the TEFL course you will have a chance to experience Thai culture before you start teaching. This will help bring the culture gradually into your system so that you don’t experience too much culture shock before you delve into the thick of things.

The friendships you will develop on the course will be friendships you can keep throughout your stay in Thailand. They become a great support as you share similar journeys. You will find that although you would like to immerse yourself in the culture or even try your hand at Thai language, you will always find that speaking with another native English speaker is a breath of fresh air to your system.

From the training you do and the teaching experience that follows you will gain skills and experience that will substantially increase your employability. You will grow in your ability to communicate with, assess and manage groups of people, and employers really value these skill sets as they are essential in so many career paths.

You’re provided with a few different options for when you’re training, and these options include single and shared accommodation priced between 10,000 – 25,000 THB for the month that you’re there. The higher end of this bracket is for shared accommodation and so the price would be split between two people. For individuals the price bracket for a months accommodation is between 10,000 – 15,000 THB.  More specific information on the accommodation can be provided upon request.

Remember that some time will pass before you get paid your first salary. Fortunately Thailand is a very cheap place to live. We have estimated that you will need around 3000 THB a week for the first weeks before you get paid. You may actually need more or less than this, depending on how well you can budget your cash and whether you are a “big spender”.

Many teachers see Thailand’s first few months as a holiday and this can be a temptation to travel a little and spend more money on partying etc. We ask you to take into account that you will need more cash if you want to drink a lot or go on trips to islands for parties.

It is advised that you to apply for travel insurance before you leave. If you are from the UK or Europe we highly recommend  Long Stay Travel Insurance.

For this program it is suggested to come into Thailand on a double entry tourist visa which can be obtained from any Thai consulate at a price of 2700 THB. Following the program you’ll be given assistance in obtaining the non B visa required to obtain a work permit in Thailand. All visa costs are your responsibility.

A Criminal Record Check

This costs about £24 GBP from Disclosure Scotland, which is the fastest system you can use in the UK and it takes around 2 weeks for them to post your police check to you. You can also pay 10 GBP and get a Subject Access Request from your local police station, but it takes a lot longer to get back to you.

Applicants from countries other than the UK should check with their local police department and ask for a basic check.

Thai Bank Accounts

It costs 500 THB to open for a bank account in Thailand.

You will have to cover the costs of your flights out to Thailand. You can get very cheap flights through Skyscanner.

You also might want to get a flight to the training area, which may cost around 5000 THB but many get sleeper trains as they only cost 500 THB and they enjoy travelling as a group.

Accommodation Deposit

You will normally need to put down two month’s rent as a rental deposit or bond for your accommodation. This will normally be around 8,000 THB. You will also need to pay for your first month’s rent upfront, which will be another 4,000 THB.

Exact Start Date

The start date is the date specified above and is the first date of training on Koh Samui. This means you need to arrive at least 4 days before the start date of each course in order to travel to the training location and overcome any jet lag. End dates are exactly 4 weeks later and courses end on a Friday.

What Am I Paying For?

4 weeks TEFL training on Koh Samui, Thailand.
A guaranteed teaching job in Thailand.
Full assistance and guidance in preparation for arriving in Thailand.
Assistance and guidance in gaining a visa.

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is a tourist hotspot, even so much so that it is the only TEFL Heaven island that actually boasts an airport! It’s actually Thailand’s third largest island measuring some 25 kilometres long and 21 kilometres wide, and with some 50 kilometres of coastal roads this means that you get easy access to a vast variety of beaches and bays that encompass many bars and restaurants. You will also have a big choice of massage parlours and spas, internet cafe’s, waterfalls and temples to visit.

Because the island is a popular one among tourists, that also means you get a lot better deals because businesses are competing with each other to get your hard earned cash! This also means that if you don’t watch your spending, you can easily spend a lot of money on more luxurious meals.

There are plenty of peaceful areas to chill out and relax, or areas to get down and party. Whatever your persuasion, Koh Samui has it all!
